Reading: Students are being challenged to read at least 24 books this year from different genres. (6 per quarter) Students should read at home at least 30 minutes, 5 nights per week totaling 150 minutes each week . They are required to answer 1 question from the “Reading HW Questions” page each night and record the book title and pages read on their reading form and get it signed to turn in each Monday. This will go on their reading grade. We will also be taking Accelerated Reading tests. Students will need to pass the A/R test to get credit for reading a book. Students may have some reading assignments from our language arts program to complete and return as well.
Writing: Students can expect to have some short writing assignments to complete at home as part of our Language Arts program. They also may have some writing to do at home if they are not finishing it during class time.
Math: Math homework will come nightly and can be found in the smaller of the two math books students will have. It should be completed and returned daily. Please take a few minutes each night and look this over with your student. I am giving you an address that has the answer book so it will be easier for you to check math nightly. 4pes.weebly.com this address takes you to the media center site. From there click on grades 5-6. click on go math. User name is michael.robinson with a period between first and last name. Password is Robinson17-18 no spaces. Click the login. Click on resources. Go to grade 5 scroll down the page about half way and you will see go math standards practice and go math teacher edition. I will show students how to get there also. This could easily be abused, I wouldn’t make it available if I didn’t think it would be.
Spelling: Students will have weekly spelling assignments. Words will come from our Language Arts program. Tests will be on Friday.
Social Studies: We will be working out of a book titled “America’s Story.” Students will have short reading assignments throughout the year. We will also study states and capitals.
Attendance: Please do all you can to have your student here at all times unless they are sick. Please call the office and excuse your student if they are absent. The new policy is a call home after 3 absences, after 5 unexcused absences Mr. Porter will call and students will be placed on lunch detention for a week. This means they will spend their lunch in Mrs. Tullis’ room.
Planners: Students have a three ring binder. This binder needs to go home and back to school daily. It contains things that are needed regularly. We will take a few minutes at the end of each day and write in our planner that is in the binder. We list assignments and reminders for upcoming important dates. Please ask to see this.
Newsletters: I send a newsletter home weekly. The beauty of technology is that if I don’t get one done I can send you an update on the Remind app. Please sign up for this.
Progress reports are available on line anytime through Power School. I will send them home a few times each quarter for you to sign and return. Please call or come in and visit if you have concerns.
Art and PE: We have an hour long art period once a week with Mrs. Robinson. We also have an hour long PE period with Mrs. Lovell.
Please go to your Power School account and sign the Acceptable Use policy, the Safe School policy, and fill out the lunch form. Whether you use it or not the lunch form is used to determine whether we get federal money that goes for reading aides and technology.
PTO: Please sign up for PTO there is no cost. This is also a great way to stay informed about what is going on in the school. Parowan.my-pto.org is the site.
Cell phones are fine to bring to school. Please only use them to make necessary phone calls. Students are discouraged from bringing them and playing games on them during breaks.
Thanks for your support. Please call or come in if you have any questions or concerns. I am looking forward to working with you and your student.
Sincerely, Mike Robinson
